Perturbative Superstring Theory

The course on "Perturbative Superstring Theory" consists of two modules, an introduction to the basics of perturbative string theory and an overview on open string field theory and tachyon condensation.
Introduction to String Theory,      Carlo Angelantonj - Università di Torino

The first part of the course will focus on perturbative string theory. After some historical remarks, we shall discuss two-dimensional conformal field theory, the Virasoro algebra, Vertex operators, the critical dimension of bosonic strings, and tree-level scattering amplitudes. We shall then show how gravity emerges from strings. We shall then introduce the Polyakov path integral and compute the one-loop vacuum amplitude for bosonic strings. We shall then discuss the covariant superstrings and the GSO projection. After having discussed D-branes and orientifolds, if time permits, we shall study toroidal compactifications, T-duality and orbifolds.

Overview of String Field Theory,      Gianluca Grignani - Università di Perugia

The aim of the second part of the course is to briefly introduce basic aspects of open string field theory and its applications to the problem of tachyon condensation. Arguments include: Witten's cubic string field theory, boundary open string field theory and tachyon condensation. If time permits, we shall conclude with an introduction to closed string field theory, superstring field theory on flat space-time, on pp-waves and AdS/CFT.
