Non-perturbative methods in Quantum Field Theory and String Theory

  The course will focus on non-perturbative methids in Quantum Mechanics, Quantum Field Theory and String Theory.
  The plan of the course is (time permitting):
 
    Introduction
    Instantons in Quantum Mechanics
    Instantons in sigma models and in Yang–Mills theories. Topological charge.
    Instantons and large order behavior in perturbation theory.
    Instantons, fermions and supersymmetry. Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics.
    Large N. Instantons in large N field theories.
    Overview of instanton effects in string theory.
    Type II superstrings and Calabi–Yau compactifications. Worldsheet instantons.
    Membrane and D-brane instantons.
